Today I thought I would begin to share our journey to the “other side” of the medical world… I don’t know if any of you, my friends and readers, have ever had experiences with alternative medicine, but I wanted to share a bit of our story. This may become a many part series, but here is a tidbit of our adventure with Maddox. We will save Brent’s journey for many other days!
There is nothing worse than your child or someone you love having a health issue and being told that there is nothing that can be done.
Because he is so young, the next news was that there was no medications or protocol that current day western medicine could offer.
We were supposed to sit back and “ride the train” (another train analogy- I seem to do a lot of train riding in my life!) until he was in his teenage years and old enough to take migraine medication.
NO THANK YOU.
I am not the kind of person that can just sit back and watch someone I love, my baby, suffer so greatly….
From our very first appointment, I felt hopeful. I was given tools, realistic things that we could do for Maddox in order to try to determine why his body responded with Migraines and what they were a response to.
We were given Unda Numbers. These are homeopathic remedies that help support the body and Maddox is given different sets of numbers based on his body at the time.
To determine his food triggers, we went on an elimination diet. We quickly determined that Chocolate was a super biggie- BIG MIGRAINE after we reintroduced the chocolate…
And lots of supplements, like fish oil, probiotic and vitamins.
Even if our first attempts were not successful, there was something about my feeling that I could be actively doing something that made the difference.
And now, we go to see the most calming, wonderful acupuncturist that does Cranial Sacral Therapy on Maddox every three months.
For the first time in two years, I didn’t feel like my whole life was revolving around the possibility, or more the fear, that Maddox might get a migraine.
The most amazing development was when we were given a homeopathic tablet (Gelsemium Sempervirens or Yellow Jessamine) that we were to give Maddox if he did get a migraine. The claim was that it would “knock it out”.
I totally laughed when the acupuncturist told me, and I had to completely eat crow when it worked! It felt kind of like a miracle… that there was actually something that could stop the train once it left the station. I was a crying mess actually… it was the biggest sense of relief and hope I had felt in years.
From my understanding, homeopathy and alternative therapies are specific to the symptom set for each individual. So for Maddox the Gelsemium might work to stop his migraine, but someone else might need something else.
Our attempts to completely eliminate the migraines are still a work in progress. We had the longest migraine-free stretch in history this year… 5 months.
That is success in my book.
Have you had any experiences with Alternative Medicine? I would love to hear other stories!!
